What is Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, where changes in the lining, cartilage, bone and fluids of joints occur. Cartilage (connective tissue) between the bones gradually wastes away (degenerates), and this can lead to painful rubbing of bone on bone in the joints. It may also cause joints to fall out of their natural positions (misalignment). The most frequently affected joints are in the hands, spine, knees and hips.
What are the symptoms of osteoarthritis?
Common symptoms of osteoarthritis are joint pain stiffness and loss of function of the affected joint. Joint pain is usually better with rests and worsens with activity. Osteoarthritis can also lead to deformities and nodularity of the joints.
How is osteoarthritis diagnosed?
Osteoarthritis is diagnosed by characteristic symptoms, physical examination and supported by radiological examination.
How is osteoarthritis treated?
Treatment of osteoarthritis include exercises, analgesic and anti-inflammatory medications. Medications that increases lubrication in the joint are also used in the treatment of osteoarthritis. Some of the patients requires assistive devices (canes, crutches). The patients whose symptoms are not controlled by the above treatment or whose activity of daily living are compromised are advised surgery.
